You can also invert the column and shoot at ground level, actually touching the ground, if you have a head that supports that. Mine does, but I didn't set that combo up, being lazy.

The second setup above is a little more awkward to work with but it's a few inches lower when you cantilever.

Motion blur was not an issue at 1/200. Anyway, I felt I was quite stable anyway with both elbows on the ground. The f/5 was done to blur the background. I tried some with more DOF and the seed quickly got lost in the foilage behind. f/8 didn't work well for this reason.

The 5D looks good on you. And thanks for sharing the set-up!

The Outtake:

The outtake is the superior image. It has no faults. The esthetics of the ribbon winner is outweighed by its inferior technical quality, particularly its overexposed left side.

I prefer the outtake. I am not a technical freak by any means...I find it more compelling...your crop really makes it a very interesting shot.

While there may be no explanation of voter tastes, the voters are nevertheless, always correct in their choices. The bottom line is that more voters liked your entry better than any other regardless of technical merits. You have consistantly managed to produce images with wonderful voter appeal and that is the true art in photography. We are often caught up in the technical aspects of photography to the neglect of more important issues, like emotional appeal, and the telling of a story with a single frame. Your entry is artfully done and deserves its ribbon.

I agree 100%. Though I feel the outtake is the better of the two images that does not mean that I believe the ribbon winner is undeserving of its placing, I don't think that at all.

None of DrAchoo's images are anything to sneeze at. Welll... except possibly the seed pictures. LOL!
