Hi, I'm considering buying a factory reconditioned dslr. Being a highly suspicious person I am anxious about purchasing a camera that has been reconditioned etc. But the price is quite inviting, sooo.... has anyone purchased such a camera and had problems? Or am I overall safe in buying a reconditioned camera?

pretty safe if:
1) one of the top ~5 brands
AND
2) was factory /mfg reconditioned
AND
3) being sold by a reputable firm
AND
4) slightly older model (bugs are known)
AND
5) a MFG warrenty still applies/or extended offer still appiles

think #5 is what would stop me - the only recondiond stuff i've purchased
is the manual 85mm PC from cameta / not much electronics to fail

I highly recommend purchasing a mfg reconditioned DSLR. I purchased my E-300 from Cameta Camera in Long Island and the camera body, both kit lenses, plus all accessories appeared in brand new condition. The camera had very little usage based on the number of shutter actuations (<50) and it came with a 3 month mfg warranty plus an additional 9 months from the seller. I made my purchase based on the many similar experiences that other purchasers of factory reconditioned DSLRs had. Since that initial buying experience I have purchased an additional 2 reconditioned lenses that were equally in pristine condition from the same vendor.

Make sure that when you make your purchase that you can also buy an extended warranty from the mfg. If you are considering making your purchase from Cameta I highly recommend them as they are a brick and mortar store near to where I live and I know many of the salesmen there personally. They have gone out of their way for me on at least one occassion.

The items usually come loosely packaged in a "reconditioned" box and if anything is missing, such as a lens hood (if your purchase includes a lens) just contact them and they will send it to you.

It's my understanding that anything that has been sold once and returned cannot be resold as new, but can be as reconditioned. Which means that if someone buys a DSLR, decides they don't want it, and sends it back, it could be resold as "reconditioned". So you might get a brand new item, or you might get one that was used some, or even defective, but fixed.

I bought my little S50 P&S reconditioned, and it's in perfect shape. Like another poster said, if it was from a store with a good reputation, I'd have no qualms about going that route. The savings are usually significant.

Odyssey's right. Some DSLR's that are reconditioned were demo models or just one that a rep got and snapped off 200 pics with that were rebuilt. Some are no doubt defective and repaired, but I'm pretty sure any reputable company is offering warranties with these reconditioned cameras, and probably the manufacturers are backing these warranties.

I bet your chances of getting a defective reconditioned camera that was put together and rebuilt by hand are far less than the chances of getting a defective brand new camera that was put together on a conveyer belt along with 10000 others that same day. Anyway, I wouldn't hesitate. Of course if it didn't come with a warranty of some kind (6 mos...1 year), I wouldn't want anything to do with it, just for peace of mind.

And make sure you're buying from a reputable company. Don't buy a 'reconditioned' camera from Joe's Cameras or something lol.

i got my 7D refurbished off eBay...nothing wrong with it that i've seen so far (though i think there's a little bit of sensor dust; if i get around to it i'll get it cleaned)

I agree that factory refurbs are usually a pretty sweet deal, esp if they come with full manufacturer's warranty.

i would say go for it. I saved 400 dollars buying my refurbished 20d off of ebay last december, and it still works great (my friend now has it).

Hi, I'm a new member to this website and I had a question about buying a recondition camera. I followed your (Ralph) and searched the top five cameras, but the one I was thinking about purchasing is an Casio Exilim and was ranked 11. I really want to purchase the Casio Exilim Ex-V8 but I'm kind of iffy because I don't really trust the "internet." I narrowed down the websites I trust to ebay and techtoysforless which I recently came across. Which would you buy? A reconditioned camera from ebay for $100 or a new sealed camera from TechToysForLess plus other accessories (included for free)? Can anyone out there help me with my dilemma? Thanks a bunch!

1) Ebay
2) Tech Toys for Less
