Ok, outside of the metal mount, What are the differences between these two lenses? I have a possible opportunity to pick one up that has some external cosmetic damage for cheap.

I am mostly disappointed with my f/1.8 due to poor focusing accuracy. Others have commented that in doing multiple tests, the focus accuracy does not seem to be nearly as accurate with the current incarnation of the lens.

The boys at Canon Service also spoke poorly of the current version of the lens.

Does anyone have any hands-on experience in using the lens such that they could speak of any real world differences? Especially as noted above...

This is a big deal for me. I would really like to see some experiences from anyone who has used both.
