has anyone got any thoughts? |
I think it could be a really good idea. I've been a Nikon shooter since the early 80s, but my frustration with Nikon̢۪s refusal to support its own older glass led me to add an Olympus 4/3rds camera to my arsenal last year specifically to use Nikon glass. Bad timing I thought at the time cause the D200 came out a couple of weeks later. But even after purchasing the D200, but I still kept and use my Olympus. And it is the only digital SLR I̢۪ll use with bellows cause of the dust issue.
The 4/3rds cameras work great with a lot of older lenses. With its wide flange and smallish back spacing it is as close to as you can get to a universal camera. I̢۪ve tried Nikon, Olympus, M42, and even M39 Leica L/enlarger lenses. The adapters are all over ebay. Some (lenses) work better than others, especially dealing with CA, and you wouldn̢۪t want to shoot say sports with one given MF and manually stopping down. There are quite a few resources for specific Zuiko lenses on 4/3rds bodies out there. A good starting off point would be the great community at fourthirdsphoto.com.
As far as the specific E-400 is concerned I haven̢۪t read up on it yet, but you will find that build quality of the Olympus cameras easily exceeds that of comparable models from Canon & Nikon. My E-300 feels as solid as my D200, and although I had to sell my E-1 to get the D200 it easily exceed it in quality. BTW the E-1 can be found new for less than $600 US. That is if you can live with 5mp (I can, in fact I wish the D200 was 6 instead of 10).
