I'm new to digital camera's and the equipment for them. I currently have a Canon Rebel XT. I mostly photograph equestrian sports where speed is a key factor. What would my best choice be for a CF card and why? I don't know what all the "x" factors mean (ie: 50x).

Thanks,
Heather Brown

Here is a really good review of CF cards. You can select your camera and then look at how the different cards rated.

a lot of the new cards have much more capable speed writing than the cameras have the ability to write to them. Speed is nice but having a 100x CF when the camera can only write at 10X is more expensive than you need. Check out your cameras transfer rate before looking for a fast card.

Here's a great price for a 1Gb size.

As far as shooting goes, it depends a lot on whether you shoot RAW or Jpeg too. If you're shooting a burst of photos, the buffer will fill up faster with the larger RAW files while it's writing to the card, and then with a slower card you might have to wait a couple seconds before shooting again. But if you're just shooting jpeg you can fill the buffer with more photos while it's writing to the card and begin the cycle over. Hope that makes sense.

Sandisk Ultra II's aren't usually that much more than the I's, and they are fast enough without going to the Extreme III's ($$$). I just got a 4 gig Transcend card, and although it seems not quite as fast as the Ultra II's (depite the 133x speed label) they are pretty affordable.
