I'm debating on converting my CRW files to Adobe DNG for archiving...

Advantages/Disadvantages?

well, they say DNG is the universal raw format, Teh Digital Negative ... right ? i don't know ... it 20 years there will be new file formats for sure ... or maybe there will be only one file format ? ... not sure ... anyways ... i didn't help you ... as usual :-)

From my point of view it is a potential waste of time and resources when it is not clear that this is a necessary effort to undertake.

If I go through with converting everything to this new format, I would feel stuck continuing to do so from this day forward. I am introducing more effort into my workflow that is potentially unneccessary.

Since disk space is finite (mine is anyway), and I do not have enough space to double up, I would also need to toss the original RAW files, or at the very least move them to an offline medium. More time spent (not necessarily wasted - but not necessarily fruiful either - only time will tell).

All of this because there is a possibility that my raw files will one day become useless? Sure, that is a possibility. But I will deal with it as that day approaches, preferably with the faster processors and media that should exist. If these files are ever unsupported it will not be a stepping-off-the-ledge event. There will be time to deal with it.

Depends on whether you think Adobe or Canon will not be around in the future. :-)
