What lenses are you trying to complement? How much money do you have to spend? |

I'll see if I can find the magazine at home tonight, but one of the UK photo mags just had a nice comparison of ten popular macros. It was an enlightening read as some of the lenses performed very well at certain apertures (the tamron comes to mind in this regard) so you would think 'hey what a great buy' but then you stop and think that those apertures aren't normally going to be used in macro photography because the dof is so thin you usually have to stop down radically to get everything in focus.
Anyway, I have the sigma 105mm and no complaints. It scored well accross the board in that mag writeup as well as all the usual suspects (fredimarna, photodo, photozone, etc). |

Hello, i had the same problem a month ago and i choose between the following options:
-Nikkor 60mm Macro
-Sigma 105mm Macro EX
-Tamron 90mm Macro
-Tokina 100mm Macro
Being the nikkor the expensier and the Tokina the cheaper. Finally after some research about this lens review (Photozone.com and SLRgear.com) i choose the Sigma 105mm. I rule the nikkor out due its price and focal lenght. About the Tokina i did not found much information so i compared Tamron 90 and Sigma 105 and the sigma were on the paper slighty (very slighty) better in construction quality and resolution than the Tamron.
I am very happy with the sigma but i think that the way to switch between manual and auto focus could be improved a lot.
Hope it helps!
P.S. Sorry for my poor english.

Thanaks Gabriel, my English is not so good either. :)
Well, unfortunately, I am on a budget so I guess I'll consider the Sigma 105mm. I'll start searching for information, see what I can find. Any ideas on a price rage of this lense? |

I had the Sigma 105mm Macro, but I sold it and bought a set of extension tubes that i use on my 85mm f1.8.
The Sigma does great macro, but I had hoped to use the lens for portraits and other non-macro uses as well, but the AF was intolerably slow. |

Where can I learn more about extension tubes?
I do a lot of portaits, may be I should be considering this as an option as well. |

There are plenty of other threads that deal with this. |

I can recommend the Canon EF-S 60mm USM macro, nice little thing. You may need something with a longer focal length though if you intend to photograph things at 1:1 that have a tendency to move or fly away. |
