Looking for reviews as much as advice - I can already predict the advice I'll get :)
Need a backup to my 18-50 2.8 sigma, and would like a bit more length for receptions...I am considering:
Tamron 28-75 2.8 ($350 at b&h after rebate) or the Tokina 28-70 2.8 ($250 at b&h).
Since it's a back up I don't want to spend a fortune on it, but I need decent low light indoor with flash at F4 or so performance - the Tokina is less expensive and the tamron is probably better...
Anyone got the tokina?
I hear it's contrasty (i like that) and got good color, but is soft at the wider apertures.
How is the tamron, sharpness wise, at 2.8? I hear it's super good stopped down a bit.
I hear the tamron tends to make warm (reddish) images - anyone notice this?

Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di
No personal experience with the Tokina though.
I can't find fault with the Tamron. No reddish images, f/2.8 sharpness is relative to distance, so not sure how to answer that. It's a great addition to any dSLR and SHOULD be included as standard equipment as an all-around/walk about lens. |

I did find some reviews on it and the tokina and i compared them to the canon 24-70.
I guess i gotta spend the money on the tamron.
Any idea when the Tokina 10-17 fisheye zoom is due out?

photozone.de doesn't rate the old toke too highly.
I'd stick with the Tamron

One of my first lenses was a Tokina, the 24-70 F2.8 if memory serves.
It was a nice lense, built like a tank and it was nice to use.
Trouble was it was unusable at anything between F2.8 - F4.5 as it was so soft it looked almost out of focus. Once above F4.5 it was a fab lense, really sharp and I got lots of good stuff with it. |
