I'm looking into getting a 1.4x teleconverter to use with my EF 70-200 f/4L. For the time being I'm looking for a non-canon alternative. Can anyone recommend a specific extender?
I'm looking for tried and tested experience... I tried one at a photo shop a while back, and it didn't work with my L glass... |

Sigma makes 2 you might be interested in....1.4X and 2X. The 2X will extend the physical length 2" and the 1.4X will .75". I have the 2X EX DG for my Minolta and find it doesn't degrade quality, which, with that 'L' glass is a must.
Added: There's also teleconverter's made by Tamron and Kenko, but I don't know about those.

I have a really nice Kenko 1.4 that works well with my 70-200 f2.8, you might want to think about not getting a 2x as you lose 2 stops and I am not sure that autofocus will still work on your lens. May look into it. I bought my kenko on the net for less then 150 with shipping NIB.

Right. I knew that. The one I tried that didn't work , in the store was a 1.4, though... |

| Says here in my instruction booklet for the F4 that the center point autofocus will still function if used with a 2x extender... |

IMO, you have a lot of money tied up in the L glass, and you're better off with the Canon 1.4x, which is specifically designed/optimized for their products. That's the one I use, and the quality fall-off is negligible.
