hello
does anyone know the method or workflow to add colour to infra red.
the cameras i am using are the sony cybershot f717 and minolta dimage 7
i cant get the blue skies like the ones in the infra red gallery or the
pure white shades. i can get some colour but my photos are not good.
if there is anyone out there who knows how you do this, all help would
be appreciated.

thank you

thanks for your reply.
that is the tutorial that ive been learning from for the past week.
its very effective and ive picked up a few tips from it.
i just cannot get the results like those that are shown on it.
everyday i follow that tutorial very carefully and as ive said i am
getting colour into my photos but cannot get that blue sky.
the sony cybershot f717 with a hoya ir filter on, the photos are green
the minolta 7 with a hoya ir filter on , the photos are orange/red.
ive seen the results what those two cameras produce and they are
fantastic but i just cannot get anywhere near that.
i think it might be something i am doing wrong in photoshop but i am
doing everything right on the tutorial, anyway thanks for your reply
and i will keep going and maybe i might just hit the jackpot with the
nice colours and blue sky.

take care

phil

Those 2 cameras are very good for infrared as far as i know.
You are using a hoya r72 filter?
Try different white balance settings until your pics are coming out pinky from the camera. On my nikon d50 i do a manual white balance setting with the filter on against sun lit grass. If the sky is pink/red in the original, when you swap the blue/red channels they should come out blue. Then adjust the hue for the blue of your choice.

once again thanks for the reply.

you mentioned white balance now there's a point.
to be honest i didnt think white balance didnt matter with having a ir filter on.
i know for a fact that on my both cameras white balance is set to "sunny"
i dont know if that is correct but it might explain why my photos on the minolta are a orange sunburst
a very bright orange. the same white balance is on the sony f717. what i will do is change the white balance and experiment with it. is there any tips for white balance when doing ir photography.
i think the camera settings is were i could be going wrong. in the photoshop i am doing everything right and i will sort those settings on my cameras and hopefully get better results.

marbo thanks for the info its a great help. (anymore pass it on)

take care
thank you

no... white balance is very important in ir photos...

use the camera's manual white balance and set it, as ir king marbo suggested, on a sunlit grassy patch... that'll get you close...

thanks for answering.

like ive said about white balance for ir, i didnt think it was involved, so tommorow i will get back out there and try again, and how about you, do you get good results from ir thats if you do it.
no photos can be worse than mine , but ive got to keep going and hopefully get the camera settings
correct and just hope everything will go right

thank you

ive been looking round the net for months for settings for the minolta 7 and its finally found.
thanks for that..ive read it and its excellent info, and she doesnt think one of her galleries
isnt very good because it was overcast!! i think its great but you and kuduz would be a better
judge of that. so ive got my settings and im ready to go and there is one small problem.
there isnt any country side in liverpool, in fact there is little greenery. no small house in a field
or sweeping landscapes with lots of different trees, just like yours and kuduz so i will find
something, there are lots of parks and see what catches my eye.
i might just have an hour or two to spare today because i will be busy.
a question for you both and what version of photoshop are you using and mark i noticed you
are using the oly 2020z for ir. there is one on ebay ive enquired about and does it have to be
modified for ir also has the lens got a thread if not do you use the cla-1 adapter.

thanks for your info and help its much appreciated

take care

Phil, i use my nikon d50 now for infrared but still use the oly 2020 when i don`t want to take a tripod. The oly is only 2mp but needs no moding.
The adaptor i use is this one the cla-1 i believe is a little short and the lens may hit the filter but you could add a spacer. I use photoshop cs.
You already have 2 good cameras for infrared not sure you need a oly c2020.

hello mark
ive been out with the minolta with the new settings you and kudzu have kindly provided.
the bright red sun bursts have gone and in have come tints of pink in the trees.
a light/tan colour is saturating the image with other different shades, for example peoples clothing, painted brick work etc. i really needed my tripod but at least i think the results are there.
now its photoshop to try and get the results i want. first i will be looking at the tutorial you posted to
me. that tutorial has the same tints of colour that ive got here.
the only reason why i was enquiring about the oly 2020z is because i wasnt getting anywhere with
the sony and the minolta, after seeing your photos it was the 2020z you were using so i thought that i would get that, then you and kudzu told me were i was going wrong. next thing im going to do is
try the sony on tungsten white balance..ive only got photoshop 4 and i cant see a channel mixer on that, the tutorial uses a channel mixer. corel psp has a channel mixer so i dont know which software
that i will be using,, anyway i will get going and see what i can do and hopefully see some better
results.

thanks for your time and patience

phil
