I shot my friend's cars this past weekend. Please let me know what you think of the photos.

Hey John,
I'm no expert, so please be careful how seriously you take me. I like the photos, only I feel there are a few ways they could've been improved. To me, the background is a little distracting in all the shots - it just seems to blend in too well with the cars. Also, in all three photos, something from the parking lot shows, which detracts from the background also (in two of the photos the curbs show, and in one of the photos the lines in the lot show). Other than those points, I liked the photos, especially the shot of the Mustang.

How far away was that hill in the background? Perhaps you could have positioned the cars a bit closer to the edge of the pavement and climbed the hill to get enough elevation so that by shooting down at the cars only pavement showed as background. The parking space lines are not much of a problem in my eyes but they could be removed with software. Maybe cropping a little more sky off the top would put the emphasis more directly on the cars. Exposure and DOF are good. The persrective you used in the Mustang shot takes advantage of it's fastback shape. On the whole I'd say pretty neat shots of pretty neat cars.

Thanks for the feed back. I had some of the same concerns with the curbs. I tried to remove them in PS but couldn't get it quite right. My friend was very pleased with them and has made them into a wallpaper for his computer.

Thanks again.

hmmm well about the only thing i would have done differently .. is if i couldnt have ende dup with a solid type background ... then i would have moved the cars far enough away from the hill and the curb .. and shoot at a real low F/stop .. so the background would be blurred more... and not be as distracting ...

I've seen several of your photos, most recently the dog (Irish Setter?) in the pool. You clearly have an eye for elements of a picture, however, the "scene" needs a bit of review. I have shot hundreds of automobiles and bikes, most recently at the Buick 100th in Flint, MI. I would be happy to send you some photos to assess if you will send me your e-mail either via a PM or through my email listed in my profile.

I think initially you might consider selecting a section of the car to focus on and then frame around that one focal point. Quartering shots are usually nice since they show at least 2 sides of the car. Shooting from a squating or kneeling position is usually good, since our viewpoint of other cars is normally while we are seated. Always remember to consider where the light/shadow is and view the entire frame for items that detract from your focal point.
