My color space in photoshop is set at Prophoto RGB. When I convert an image from RAW using ACR and then save this image as a JPEG, the file size is usually 30-40% smaller with the same compression setting than if I convert from RAW in sRGB and save as a JPEG. If I understand correctly, color profiles are a key used to interpret color values of an image within a color space, why would it affect file size? And if prophoto RGB is consistently giving smaller files for the same compression setting, why isn't it the web standard instead of sRGB?

sRGB is used for the color space for the web simply because it most closely matches the color profile of computer screens.

About the rest of your question about compression: I hazzard to guess that a larger color space could be compressed quite a bit more, especially if not all of the color space is being used in the compressed file. I'm not sure that's what's going on, but my best guess.

You should totally spring for an ICC Colour Profile for you printer/monitor cominabtion.

That way what you see is what you get.

Google ICC color profile.

I laughed at this part. The web is not about efficiency if that was the case we'd have much better standards across the board not just color space formats.
