A pro friend has asked me to share a booth at a local art show next month. I have NO idea what to order since I've never done an art show before. I won't be showing anything with my daughter in it so that is out. I want some variety.
So could you look through my portfolio and let me know would work well at an art show please? I'm trying to get an idea of what people like to see apart from my daughter haha. If you could just post the link or the thumbnail here I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

I looked through your portfolio with the hope of establishing a theme. That was fun - you have a nice variety there. After looking at everything I definitely think you have a nack for nostalgic feeling images...
PS: Sorry if any of these are you daughter - but they seemed impersonal enough i thought they might be OK.

This one is probably your daughter but it is definitely a great shot if you decide to include her :
I like this one but I don't know if it fits this theme:

Notes: Make sure the horizon is level on the boat images. It might be my monitor but some images might benefit from a hint of contrast and sharpness. If you so use the pool image, blur or clone ot the pool logo and pool elements in the background.
I included the sunset because it is a wonderful composition and artistic - not sure how it fits in with the rest but it depends on how the show is presented.
Good luck.

The ones with the girls I can't use, the girl in the pool is my daughter and the one with 2 girls is her best friend.
Do you think using the renactment photo would be okay even though I don't have have his permission?

and thank you for the advice. I'd like to use the one of my daughter and our dog, but it's a special photo and I don't know if I want it hanging in someone else's house - if it were to be bought. I suppose I could still show it and just put "not for sale" on it.

i didn't realize they were going to be for sale. Personally, I would love to sell images that said something to someone, regardless of whether they were personal to me - but that's me, of course. If you want to present something and not sell it, just use stickers - a red dot means not for sale - if you want to have a general price, just use a green dot for $75, a yellow dot for $50 or somethign like that. Just an idea.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it. My friend is going for a wildlife and outdoor theme- flowers, birds, waterscapes, ect. I don't want to go totally along with his theme because I want to be noticed too. He's well known in the area so I'm trying to make somewhat of a name for myself too.
I have a few more that I don't have in my portfolio that I'll probably be ordering too. I'm hoping I do well. He said last year he made over 800 dollars at this particular show- it's actually a festival with an art show going on at the same time if that makes sense.

Oh and one more questions. Do I leave my name on the actual print itself, or sign the matting? I'm thinking I sign the matting because that's what I've seen at the shops around town.

The pictures of kids are really classy and emotive - the treatment you've used is great too. This might be a nice contrast to his nature stuff.
As far as the name, I wouldn't interfere with the image if it were me - so you are on the right track as far as I'm concerned. You're doing something that I've wanted to do but just never put in the effort. Good luck.

thanks!

I'm also going to be doing another festival with this same guy in the spring. Year before last his work placed first. It's the "Daffodil Festival". I'm still shocked that he asked me lol. He and my husband are friends and I don't know him all that well. I know he does nice work, but the fact that he likes mine enough to invite me is an honor. I've been waiting for this oppurtunity for a while now.

Hi- Your post caught my eye because I recently requested some input on selections for a juried art show. Both of the photos that I submitted are portraits of my kids, and both were accepted and will be displayed in a storefront window starting this Thursday during our town's annual ArtWalk show. I felt a bit funny about submitting portraits of my own kids, but that's mostly what I take and they were my strongest images. All of the work in the show is for sale, and it'll probably feel somewhat strange thinking that my kids' pictures might be hanging in someone else's house, but I'm sure that I'd feel flattered as well. I happen to think that the images of your daughter are among your strongest and you might want to reconsider showing them. A well done portrait captures something that people can relate to on an emotional level and goes beyond being a picture of that particular person in the photo. These are some of the images that I think may have that appeal to others:
I can totaly understand if you would rather not show pictures of your daughter, though. I also thought that these images from your portfolio were really nice:
As for signing the work, I had the same question and asked around a bit. Traditionally, the border of the print (outside the print) is signed, and then matted. Many people sign the mat though, which is what I ended up doing because I didn't like how dingy the mat looked juxtaposed with the stark white of the photo paper. It's a good idea to sign the back of your print also, in case someone ever chooses to remat it at some point. I hope that this was somewhat helpful to you. Congratulations and best of luck in the show. Erin :)
BTW, these are my photos that will appear in the art show:

Thank you so much Erin. A lot of very helpful information you gave me.

The ones of my daughter are my favorite, but I'm still so hesitant on using them. Course I have them on here so what's the difference right? Our friend is coming over in the next week to help me decide. I don't want to go along with his theme too much because like metitate said, it would be nice to contrast that with something different.
The two photos you posted are beautiful. They show soooo much expression and soul.

thanks again for your input!
