Having gotten my Nikon D80 and Tokina 18-200 mm at the weekend I felt that I needed to get a reasonable prime lens, especially for the low light stuff. I found a good price on the Nikkor 50mm and it came today.
Wow!
It may not be the most expensive lens in the world but it does exactly what it sets out to do. I always carried and used the 50mm prime with my old Minolta SLR gear and now I remember why. I also like the zoom on the prime, too - walk towards the subject to zoom in, and walk away from the subject to zoom out.
Nostalgia rules today :-) |

| Yep, great lens. How are you liking the D80? (I know, stupid question ;-) ) I'm trying to convince some friends to look into one. |

Early days yet but it is a very "full" camera but overall simple enough to use without too much exploration of all of its features. Personally, I love it! :-) |

| Ditto, I have been forcing myself to use my 50 1.8 on the D70. Great lens. |

50mm f1.8 is simply one of the most useful lenses you can buy. cheap as hell and should be a part of every kit!

Try looking for them used. I picked mine up for $160 so it wasn't too bad of an upgrade.
Or give the old AIS lenses a look.

On the D80 you cannot use the AIS lenses, one of the few "potential" flaws in the D80. Not that I own any AIS lenses, you understand :-) |

You can use them. You just can't meter with them, just like on the D70 and D50.
I used to use manual lenses on my D70 :)

Ah! I did not realise that! Does this imply a hand metering job then? |

Either that or shoot, then look at the exposure, change settings, and reshoot. |

If you want the same "feel" of a normal lens, you need to get the 35mm F/2. I use it more than my 50. |
