On another photography website Usefilm.com, there's a current thread about influential photographers. As a beginner, I found this a nice introduction to the many, many fine professionals out there. I searched those names in Google and found the study to be very valuable. Thinking that the list I made for myself of names and website would be helpful for others here, I'm posting the first part of my list. If people do, indeed, find it interesting, I can post the other parts. It is, however, very long, hence the division into parts.
This list is in no way complete, nor alphabetical, as it has been compiled chronologically from a currently running thread. Also, the link provided is not always the main source. It is simply the first working link that Google threw up.
Ansel Adams, Tim Fitzharris, John Shaw, Eliot Porter, Tom Walker, Tom Mangelsen, Michio Hoshino, John Shepard, Galen Rowell, Michael Kenna, Norbet Wu, King Wu, Steve Kaufman, Ken Duncan, Leo Meier, Jack Dykinga, Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting, Ian MacEachern, Dan Heller, Kenneth Kwan, Emil Schildt, Bahman Farzad, Clyde Butcher, Brett Weston, Richard Misrach, Robert Frank, Cartier-Bresson, Elliot Erwitt, Marc Riboud, David Alan Harvey, Antonin Kratochvil
Often, these links are themselves interesting starting points. |

Here is another photographer you may want to check out William H. Rau. His works are from the very early 1900's. I have had the opportunity to check out his works upclose it is amazing the quality of his works back then. He is definately an overlooked master of photography.
There are several links to his works on this page. //www.officemuseum.com/photo_gallery_1910_William_H_Rau.htm |

My photography teacher was an apprentice under Eliot Porter for 5 years. Afterwards he worked with the other big name in color photography of the time. I don't recall his name; I just know that he had quite a different perspective than Porter did.
edit : after doing some investigation, I found my teacher's website!
