Does anybody have any insight on fall foliage locations in the eastern Sierra Nevadas? I'm thinking of going up for a few days on a photo trip to the Bishop area either this weekend or next (depending on when the colors peak). Bishop Creek/Lake Sabrina looks nice from what I see online, but I was wondering if there were any other nice areas with fall colors and streams/lakes up there to check into. Thanks for any help. |

The area around Tioga Pass is beautiful... well, it's the only area of the eastern Sierras that I've seen! A side trip to Mono Lake would be a possible side-benefit of that region.
Be careful though, I understand that they close the pass for the winter at the first hint of a snowflake, and it's a *long* drive around, LOL.

If you do a search on the Sac Bee website they do a pretty big spread on it every year including week by week information so you can determine which areas are in peak. |

No detour would be required coming from Southern California. You just take 395 up and back. |

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll wait for Tioga Pass until maybe early next summer, but Mono Lake is very tempting. I was considering taking an extra day just for the lake at sunrise/sunset and maybe head into Bodie during the day. I'll check out the Sacramento Bee too, thanks for the heads up on that. I forgot to mention, I have an AWD Suv, so some light off roading would be ok. |

I am wanting to go up there as well...the whole area Sabrina and South Lake are BEAUTIFUL...I love it up there.
You cannot tell by the calendar just when everything will peak..it really varies year to year. One week everything will be there and the next week gone. |

You cannot beat the approach to Tioga Pass for altitude gain, which translates into the greatest range of turning leaves, top-to-bottom. You don't have to go all the way. Mono Lake is wonderful, but it doesn't much matter if you hit it in autumn or not.
