If you haven't already made one and your friend is still looking for a project, you could make it dual purpose. My thought is to have a simple sturdy frame made of metal and use it as a base for a table. Make a wood top that secures to the base that is easily removable. That way when you aren't using it you at least gain some work space.

Ok this to me sounds like fun.
I would have him make a collapsable metal frame, most likely tubing with sides that are removable (on hinges or with a twist lock to hold them on/take them off) and include a metal flooring for the Curved back. With this set up you could remove the sides and top to use a cloth or plastic sides, put in any difuser material and use the metal sides ect. And with the metal flooring you could change the material covering the flooring and fit to its shape. Also with this you could have on side have a coller or tripod mount attached so you could mount it and aim it have a light source on one side and a difusser on the other and make it into a small soft box...suddenly this thing becomes multi purpose

Actually that sounds pretty cool...! Have a crude drawing by chance :)
I was thinking that Aluminum tubing and panels would be nice and light, durable, and Rust Proof ! Welding Aluminum presents a bit more of a challenge, but it would be light and Sturdy, that's for sure.
