I've started to tire of using cheap, slow optics so I've been looking at getting a new lens to cover a normal range (i.e., rarely leaves the camera). So far the undoubted leader is the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, which seems to be everyone's favorite, and I can get that for under $300. Any other suggestions? I had looked at the Sigma 18-50/2.8, but that seems to have problems with distortion and CA, not to mention being more expensive than the Tamron. Also contending is the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG, but it seems that the Tamron is yet again regarded higher than that.

I'm really happy with my Tamron. Only thing is, it's not very wide at the wide end on a crop digital camera. On film, 28mm is wide enough for most photojournalism and landscape stuff, but with digital it's almost as long as a 50 on film.

I have the Tamron. On your 5D the wide side (28mm) would be equivalent to 42mm (1.5 crop). OK for portrait and walk around, not good for landscape (at least not for me). Not sure what you plan on shooting. Only you know if that's wide enough.
Edited: Deleted suggestion. You asked for standard zoom, not wide.

Yeah, I know the range will be a little limiting but I just want something of a decent (read: above kit) quality for a walkaround. Eventually, later on, I want to get a Sigma 10-20 to cover the wide stuff.

how about the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8? Its $409 at B&H. IIRC, Tokina and Tamaron have similar offerings.

28 and even 24 is not likely wide enough on a cropped frame body. 24 can work, but indoors you'll want more.
I have the Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX - not sure where you're hearing about distrotionor CA - that's news to me and I've had this lens ofr a year and half - i looked into perpahs moving to the tamron 17-50 2.8 but the both get nearly the same reviews.
The only issue i have with the sigma, and i hear the tamron is the same, is the images are a tad soft at aps wider than 3.5. The sigma is a bit less costly than the Tamron and has been out longer so you might find a used one for even less.
Tokina is due to release a similar lens inthe next month or so.
