I made the move today and bought the XTi. I’ve known since I joined in June that I wanted to move up to a DSLR. I have to admit that I was biased toward Canon because of my experience with Canon in film cameras. I still have and use the AE-1 that I purchased in 1979 (that officially dated myself as an old fart). My G5 has also been a super camera.

The main reason I’m posting is to say thanks for your help in making my decision. With everything I’ve read here and on a couple of other sites I think I made an informed decision. It wasn’t an easy one though. I took in all the facts and opinions I could and seriously considered the D80 and the 30D. In the end my Canon bias and the budget won out.

For now I’ll see what I can get from the kit but I’m sure as the budget allows I’ll be looking for some better glass.

I noticed that there are a handful of other XTi owners but no one has submitted photos yet. So one note of caution, don’t judge the XTi performance based on my work when I start to post. I’m sure I won’t do this camera justice for a while. But look out after I get some practice. :-)

Thanks again for your help!

Congrats on the new toy! Here's to many fun hours of shooting with it. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. And hey, with so few owners at the moment, you can command the "best of" page for your camera!

LOL, Thanks Melethia. Hmmm, I'll have to take some shots tomorrow so I don't miss the chance. :-)

.

Del, I guess I'm no longer the DSLR "newbie" on this site. I bought mine last night.

Enjoy!

Well, congrats on the purchase. Looking forward to some images. Seems to be contagious. Lots of new dslr owners of late, including me. Can't imagine life without it now. It has fused to my eye socket, and my hands are now permanently curled into shutter release shape. Can't put it down. Now what do I do with all the images?

First order of business Canon 50mm f/1.8 II. Best lens ever for its price. Under $100 and hard to beat in quality. :-)

Big congrats on the XTi purchase... let us know how that sensor cleaning system works :-)

Welcome to the club! I just made the move to the other new camera- tne Nikon D80. Quality is so much better than what I had been using.

Congrats and welcome to the new world of DSLR photography! Very good choice of camera, it looks quite nice...for a Canon anyway ;-)

Nice for Canon, maybe, but after I did some night shots, I saw several hot pixels - one was so big (and red) I thought it was a beacon on a mast on a building - but then I saw it was on all the (darker) shots I have made. The shop could not remap the sensor, seemed they did not know what I was talking of, so they told me to bring all packaging and return the camera for another one. Can advice to do a burned pixel test as the first thing, maybe even in the shop! Will bring laptop, test new camera, download to computer and check it ... how big an issue is it with a remap, and shouldn't the shop be able to do it?

Have made some shots already though, see my profile (soon!) for samples.

EDIT: Here is a link - //www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio.php?USER_ID=60165&collection_id=17689 - blame me, not the camera/lenses! I suppose this is about the same as the 350D, or even 300D.

SLR is new to me, so I have to get used to changing lenses and that, but it is very exciting! I know that the 50mm 1.8 II is not the most expensive lens there is, but especially for the money, it turns out some really nice shots for me! So does the 10-22mm, but THAT lens is a completely different price range. I do not regret I bought it though.

Now for the long zoom ... that is going to be a tough choice for me ...

How do you do a burned pixel test?

Put the lens cap on and/or go into a dark room and take a picture. Might as well be at 30 seconds, or use different shutter times to see if it makes a difference.

Afterwards, the picture should be all black, but I have a red, large dot right/above center, and a blue one close to it. On my 15" laptop screen I can count about 8 smaller or larger "stars" - if I zoomed and checked at 100%, I could probably find some more ...

My brand new Canon EOS-400D appears to have a tiny red dot and a tiny grey dot when I blow it up to pixel size in PS.

Is this cause for returning the camera?

In my opinion, this should not be a major issue and is probably found on almost every digital sensor. Unless you are having a very large print made of something dark. Even then you can easily remove it with photo editing if it is visible. You will want to be careful about changing lenses though. You do not want to allow dust inside that may get on your sensor. That is harder to deal with. I wouldn't worry about a couple of pixels. If it was many or in a large enough clump to be easliy notisable, then you can be concerned.

Sorry, my answer became too much off topic, so I moved my latest post to this thread: //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=448711&page=1#2846904

All in all, I am very content with my new dSLR camera!
