Ok check this thread for some information on the new lens.
I thought it would be a very very interesting lens for anyone interested in Pentax as well, seeing as Pentax and Tokina are linked. Pentax will be releasing their own brand-specific version of this.
That would be a sweet startup mix: K100D or K10D +16-50 f/2.8. Would be pretty damned impressive with that on-body anti-shake...
Canon's 17-55mm f/2.8 IS is still around 1200 bucks or something...
On a Canon, the 16-50 is approximately 26-80mm. On a Nikon/Pentax, it's 24-75mm.

Information says that Sept 10-17 week will see the start of shipping and lens availability in Japan. I was told that the lens would be available around here around the beginning of October.
Don't know about North America.
Certainly something to watch for.
I heard from one source that Pentax and Tokina make the same lenses, but Pentax has a proprietary coating that they don't allow Tokina to use which helps lessen Chromatic Aberration. Let's hope it's not a huge issue with this lens.
Let's also hope that someone gets a copy of the lens to Photozone.de quick for a good thorough check. |

The fisheye zoom definitely interests me!
The 50-135 did, but now sigma has their 50-150 2.8 for $679...more range for possibly less cost.
teh 16-50 has a bit more range than the sigma 18-50 or tamron 17-50, but at an estiamted $600 is a bit pricey (the others are 400 and 450).
the 17-135 that's due in january might make a nice walk aound lens though.

This lens appears to be missing in action. I would like to know if anyone has heard anything.
I'm about to go for ANOTHER trip in the mountains just at a time of the year when the air starts to get a bit clearer and I am still relying on my P&S for wide angle shots.
Yeck!
I sent Tokina an email about this and have received no reply.
This lens started showing up in press releases as early as FEBRUARY.
Anyone else interested in emailing them can find a contact at www.tokinalens.com
I've been expecting this lens since May when I was first told that it would be available at the end of the month. I believe that it's very possible that nobody has really been asking for this lens, so Tokina has gotten cold feet.
Help the cause by calling your local shops and asking them to check into this lens for you. If enough people ask, Tokina might actually get off their keesters.

I've been eagerly awaiting this lens also, but I bet it will late winter-early spring before you see any for sale. With their joint venture with Pentax and the fact that the Pentax version (at least same optical formula) was just announced, I really doubt they want to take any spotlight off Pentax. I have really high hope for this lens since the only way to currently get 84 degree coverage (24mm in 35mm Equivelent terms) is in the middle of the wide zooms out there. The 24mm was by far my most used lens before the digital revolution.

I read march 2007 for the release date on this lens.
Weather sealed too, to match the specs of the K10D...

Why not just get a Canon 10-22 and never look back? If you don't want to shoot film or full frame, it's a great lens... |

It's a good idea, but my widest lens right now is the 50mm f/1.8 with which I have a rather lopsided love-hate-hate relationship right now.
I love what it does for headshots and I hate what it does for everything else.
It's flipping ridiculous to be restricted to 50mm as the widest lens.
I just got back from a trip in the mountains at 3000meters and spent the night under the stars with a 4 am wakeup, shooting down on the sunrise lit clouds and nearby peaks... I was supremely glad of my friend's kit lens I was borrowing... I really do wish that I could have something a bit more 'walkaround' though... Even the 18mm was just a hair too long...
While I would love the 10-22 (my friend has one and I've played with it a bit), and it was in my original lens plan, I simply cannot afford it now. I still have to get a flash and a root canal/crown is going to have to replace my 50mm f/1.4.
PS. If you want to spend the night at 6 degrees celsius, consider bringing your camera and telephoto into your sleeping bag... Nothing like having a face-to face with a red-faced monkey chilling out on the side of the road only to find your lenses impossibly fogged up... :( |
