Suddenly on my Dell I can't get 1024 resolution. Screen is a screwed up. Went to safe mode and was able to set to 800x600 and this worked. I can't get back to 1024x768 without my screen going "crazy".

I have the Intel 82865G hardware/driver. I tried updating it to no avail....

Is this a laptop or desktop

Very messed up...wild colors, screen is static (meaning still) but all twisted and turned...Windows is still running b/c I can fish around with the "windows" key on the keyboard and shut down.

In other words...windows is up...I just can't "see" it correctly.

sounds like a refresh rate problem (horizontal sync or vertical something or other). you are on windows?

Yes...running windows on a Dell desktop

maybe your monitor is whack

Sounds like a refresh rate thing to me too. Try going into display properties, settings, advanced, monitor, and setting it to hide modes the monitor can't display. Or just set it to 60hz and then to 1024x768. If that doesn't work, maybe a new monitor would be good.

.

When I've seen this happen in the past, it was because of an incorrect video card driver. Right-click on desktop and choose "Properties". Go to the Settings tab, click the Advanced button, click on the Adapter tab. If the Adapter Type is something that is generic (not Dell, or NVidia for example), then that generic driver may not go much higher than 8x6 (hundred).

For sure try reinstalling your dedicated video driver, if you've still got the disk for it. Then in properties, choose it and assign it. Your driver may have gone corrupted on you, or the computer may have grabbed a wrong driver for no apparent reason; I've had junk like that happen in the past, though not with video drivers...

nothing happens "suddenly". Think hard - did you messed with the display settings? installed any new stuff?

Thanks all...I did all what you've said. I even went to Dell and downloaded an updated driver for my system. The download and install went well. However, I still can't get higher than 800x600.

I did the refresh rate thing also. I tried every conceivable combination of settings.

I did find that when I change the refresh rate, the pattern of the screwed up screen does change a bit. So maybe that is pointing to a refresh rate problem.

Could a monitor be the problem? I have been using a Philips HD/TV/Montior for about 2 years with no problems until tonight.

I guess I'll get my other flat screen and hook it up tomorrow and see if the problem is solved.

Thanks,

Kenskid

It seems to be a hardware problem. Is this an on-board graphics card that you have? Do you have another graphics card laying around to try? Or do what you wanted: hook up another monitor and do a differential diagnosis.

I recently had a problem with my optiplex gx270, and a quick google search returned my exact problem and a solution (to call Dell to replace motherboard) which I did and it worked!

I can recommend googling for your graphics adapter model and "screen resolution" or something like this. I bet that you're not the first one in the world to see this problem.

And if you are... oh, well, someone's gotta be first.

Turns out it was my monitor. It is a Philips HDTV combo monitor. Very strange that this would happen. I'm not convinced it is "broke" but rather that I "switch" something and can't get it back.

The TV/monitor works very well, it just "fizzes" out when I switch it to 1024x768.

I put my old Dell Flatscreen on and it is working fine.

Thanks all.
