This is just a cool site with some very creative European artists from some hot shot ad agency.

But, there are some very cool examples of matte paintings.

After you click the link and you see the glowing cracked egg, scroll to the bottom and click on the anchor looking dealy. Again, click on the anchor looking dealy until you see a row of eggs. The third egg is the Matte paintings.

Some of the pix are of behind the scenes during production.

Some are just Mattes.

The same differance using PS mattes and green, blue or red screens.

Hell, just check out the whole site, it is very cool.

i haddn't realised Jean-Pierre Jeunet is directing "Life of Pi"

Thanks for posting that. Composited images and, in particular, the art of matte painting have always been of interest to me. Not only the green screen methods as used to day but even the classical backdrop painting and hand-cut composite photos of William Notman in the 1800's. Impressive stuff.
