This was my challenge entry for august free study:

and this is another shot I took from the same place:


Would the second one fare better than the first one (ended just below 6.0)

Thank you all for your comments on the challenge entry - I'm just looking for a comparison, and whether it is an improvement or not.

Also, many commented on the color of the lake - it is real - the color of the sky is worked on in both photos, less in the second one.

Thanks, bugzeye! Anyone else? Or is it completely boring and I should have stayed out of this one?

First one look worked on - second looks more natural

The second one has more even tones in the water and it seems more balanced in the water which to me is a plus. But the second has alittle halo on the outline of the mountains that I think voters may bock you down a point for here and there. So it may have done it alittle bit better but I think it would be very close.

Second one has a lot more detail in the trees and looks more natural.

In general, the first has more potential. You need the grounding of the rock in the foreground, IMO. But maybe not so MUCH of it, and not so bright. A little cropping fore and right, a little burning on the rock, a little gradient in the sky, results in this quick-n-dirty variation:



Maybe something in that direction, eh? Beautiful scene, btw :-)

As that I was one of your commenters during voting - I got fooled into thinking that the water looked too overprocessed. I have since looked up Peyto Lake and found that it really is a turquoise color!!! One learns something new everyday - my apologies for the assumption. But what I said about too much of the ground plane in the foreground stands - it is too distracting. While your 2nd attempt makes the water more a 'natural color' it adds too much yellow tones to the greens of the trees and sky - making them less vibrant. Bear_Music did a nice-touch up job that is closer to what I was thinking it could be.

This one's a hard one for anyone who doesn't know that lake, because the colour really *doesn't* look real, and I know it is. I have shots from the same lookout :)

They're right, the second would probably do better, though I know the first is closer to the real look of it.
