Some photos I took on Sunday... Out of 170 photos 4 are okay...I used my Nikkor 18-70mm.

The spaghetti sauce in a bowl has some charm.

I've never been really interested in dog pics personally though...

I assume you used some fill flash on the guy in the hat? Might even stand to have a bit more....

The shot with the most potential for a 'party shot' IMHO is the martini shot, but I suspect it would have been a bit better without the cluttered background. Either grass or sky would also have worked well. Sky would have made the shot a fair bit more challenging though for lighting.

You say that 4 are okay, is this related to content or a photographic issue?

On the guy in the hat I used the program mode with no flash...

The martini shot was just some random snapshot, the lighting did suck...

Only 4 are good cause it was on continuous mode...

On the shot with the man, usually when sunlight is involved, some lighting control is inevitably necessary. Be it from a reflector, a diffuser or a flash. The simplest method is OFTEN a flash, but not always. Flash use can be a bit complicated. In that shot though, it probably wouldn't have been all that complicated. The backlight would still have come through and your flash metering would have brought the flash exposure down just a notch (flash metering is evaluative and the big white t-shirt would have been pretty strong for the flash... it would have compensated by turning it down just a hair). You probably would have had a pretty decent improvement pretty simply.

On the martini shot, the lighting isn't really the biggest problem. The DOF and background is.

The angle and composition is nice, but there is also a fair bit of 'spatter' that could have been cleaned up....

as to the lighting, a little contrast boost and a bit of a kick in the channel specific hue/saturation would probably do wonders to compensate for that.

But definitely pay attention to your backgrounds... look for less clutter, solid, contrasting colors and differences in luminosity.

Oh and Welcome to DPC! :)
