Say I put my 18-55mm f/3.5 lens on 50mm f/8 and then say I take my 50mm f/1.8 lens at put it on f/8. Would they take the same picture?

As far as framing of the image goes, yes, exactly the same. Your 50mm f/1.8 would probably take a slightly "crisper" picture, due to its superior optics. It sort of depends on the detail in the subject and the clarity of the lighting whether the difference is noticeable.

Hey Bear, you back from your trip? Pics for us yet? Love to see your images of Cannon Beach if you have any...

Yes but the 18-55mm will be way softer.

Yes, 50mm is 50mm, as long as you're shooting with the same (or similar body). I'd say the 1.8 will be slightly sharper due to the superior optics, but the old kit lens is a surprisingly good performer for the price, and unfairly maligned.

Anybody who is able, how about posting a side by side test?

I can do it when I get home with my daughter's rebel and my 50mm f/2.5 macro lens (it's a canon) and her kit.

Definitely a side-by-side comparison I would be interested in seeing too...

At f/8, the sharpness of the 50mm should already by peaked, but so should the kit lens.

In my experience though the 50mm f/1.8 does seem to have odd characteristics when you get a little farther out. I can't get anything sharp beyond a certain point about 20 feet away and Canon has told me that the lens is working properly on my 30D.

[hijack]Check out //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=462754 for some shots. But the Cannon Beach shots are on hold pending challenge entry. Got some there from Astoria, however...[/hijack]

bumpsie daisy. still interested in seeing comparison shots. I could have done them myself a few weeks ago, but my camera and I are having a little 'time out' and I returned the kit lens I borrowed a couple of weeks ago too...

OK, this was a quicky, and I did a pretty poor job, but it's a start. See my pBase gallery so you can view both photos in full pixel size:

The Canon Kit doesn't have accurate tick marks so I estimated and ended up setting it at 43mm instead of 50, but otherwise they're equivalent. View and post comments here.

shot on my daughter's rebel since my 10D won't accept the kit lens. Both set to f8. Note how the kit lens was sharper around the edges??

unedited except saved for web at jpg 70 quality (to lower file size a bit)

Updated the test with two better images, now kit at 49mm and 50mm 2.5 macro (canon). Shot a shelf of books instead of a stupid piece of paper. See link in above message.

Thanks guy. Is it just my eyes or is the kit lens sharper on the shots of the bookshelves?

weird...

Anyhow, it certainly seems to hold up just fine...

That's always been my feeling with the 18-55 kit. Look at the gallery on this site (link). This lens can clearly perform very well.

On the other hand, the comparision I posted was not with the 50 1.8 or 1.5, but with the Canon 50 2.5 macro. I've always thought this is a great lens too, but the 50 1.8 might well put it to shame.
