I can maybe understand having beer in bottles in enclosed locations, like bars. But why do they allow people to buy beer in bottles then take it somewhere? Inebriated people do stupid things, like throw those bottles from moving vehicles. Then those bottles end up on the sides of roads, in pieces. This does NOT work well for those of us who ride bicycles on those roads.

Just my personal annoyance for today. I think cans are just fine. To whom do I speak to get manufacturers to give up on the bottle idea??

Ever try drinking beer out of a bag? Actually I do understand your complaint every now and then Ill hear a bottle breaking in the middle of the night as a car drives past. It is like you said people doing stupid things. But beer does taste better in the bottle.

No, I don't drink beer. Used to in my younger days but only because everyone else did. Never did like the taste of it.

Still, I really wish they'd quite putting it in bottles. Beer + bottles + rednecks in trucks = very bad combo.

That may be, but the same is true of most sodas as well. How easy is it to find a Dr. Pepper or Pepsi in a glass bottle -- even though the taste is so much better than when drank from a plastic bottle or aluminum can. Sodas are in plastic bottles because of activists got it changed.

Melethia, if it makes you feel any better an unbroken bottle will not decompose as easily as a broken one. Once broken the smaller pieces are easily broken still smaller and smaller.

They are doing the environment a favor by breaking the bottles when done with them.

Actually, it does the environment a disservice since tires will go to the landfill long before their time due to unfixable punctures from the broken glass. ;o)

ok let me refrase that, Beer taste like crap in cans and plastic.

It is not only Rednecks in Pick Up's doing it. Mexicans in Low Riders tossing Corona bottles is the main culpert around these parts.

Why not just put Corona in a plastic bottle ?

Actually, whole bottles are easier to pick up and dispose of. Broken bottles may eventually lead to my personal decomposition when the front tire blows while going downhill. If I'm in pieces, do I decompose faster too? :/

I prefer cans because they hold more beer, are lighter to carry, cool off faster, can be crunched against my head to impress the women, you can do shotguns with them, the deposit is less, they are safer to fall on when I get really hammered, and the list goes on.
:-)

Actually, that is one item I would like to see here in Virginia - a deposit on cans and bottles. Currently there isn't one. The amount of litter is ridiculous in many areas, backroads especially.

The deposit needs to be steep too. Make it .25 cents a bottle/can. If that didn't make people think twice about tossing it out the window, at least some energetic person would be willing to pick them up if a little extra cash could be made.

Seriously!

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, i hated when they switched the sodas to plastic, it was better in glass! and they better not mess with my Corona or coors light :)

You can keep your Corona and Coors Light in bottles, ma'am. I trust you're not the "throw it out the window" kinda person.

It's not the bottle's fault, really. Perhaps it's the beer? Get that prohibition thing going again!

Perhaps it's really a littering issue?

Interesting concept!

I suppose it's not the bottle's fault - after all, it dies in the process of being tossed and broken, rather than being reused as it should be.

I think it's the idiots' fault.

Beer that is in cans tastes a lot like the can. Good beer doesn't come in cans at all.

I think the problem is more about the drunken idiot than the bottle itself.

Ah, but the standard is to punish the many for the actions of the few. Rather than discipline the few, of course.

I don't drink beer, so i wouldn't care. :) Don't much like stepping on glass, tho, since i hate to wear shoes. But if wine bottles were prohibited, my hubby would have a conniption.

Gotta say I have yet to see a broken wine bottle on the side of the road. Had to avoid at least five broken beer bottles (and one intact one) in a 25 mile ride yesterday. I've had to avoid lots of other interesting things as well, but no wine bottles yet!

Bottle/can deposit is a begining solution. This is a litter problem not a bottle problem.

A deposit on cigarette butts would be another impacting solution, that may curb the disgusting practice of "flicking" butts out the window of moving vehicles.

As mentioned above, the higher the deposit price the more likely they will get returned and not discarded. Of course for some juvenile behaviors, no matter the price, irresponsible action will occurr.

I just can't visualise someone driving along sipping a nice chardonnay before throwing the bottle out the window... ;-)

There you go...that'll stop the raging alcoholics from buying beer and discarding their cans onto the streets. Just like a crack head will find a way to use crack if you take away his pipe, these folks will just buy 16 ounce cans instead of 32 ounce cans. That sounds to me as though instead of one can laying in the gutter for every 32 ounces of beer consumed, there will now be 2 cans cluttering up the street.

If you don't want the streets littered with empty beer cans and the public insists on consuming beer in the streets, you have two options. Put up more trash cans and make them more easily accessible, or hire a clean-up crew.

Good beer does not come in bottles; it comes in barrels. Perhaps it is time to switch to an all-barrel regime!

[but bottles are far better than cans...]
