I started a thread that I thought would be benificial to those of us that needed comments, to let us know what we did right with a photo or what we did wrong and how could we improve, but it almost seems that commenting is a scarry thing to most; I know it is for me; I know I am not technically sound or artistically gifted but I do love to take photographs; so I can only comment on what I like and don't like and why, that is when I have the guts and feel like I am worthy enough to comment on such beautiful work that is done on this site. So please take a little time a give a comment to those who could really use your help to be better than they thought they could be. Sorry for going on so much have a great day where ever you are. |

I completely agree ... I was "comment shy" for a long time, but have recently gotten over that and realized that if you want feedback and comments that you have to GIVE them too! I know that most of the folks that participate at this site are trying to improve their photography, just like me and they're looking for input. I've been participating in the "comments wanted" threads and it's working out well ... I'm getting feedback and have seen some amazing portfolios ... |

Another good way is to get into the 30 days of self portraits. Not only will people be commenting on your SPs, you'll be commenting on theirs as well. Also, it let's people know who you are and people are more likely to comment for folks they know.

It not that I was looking for the comments for my self but I have been watching the forum sinse I signed up here and seen that one of the common complaints was commenting so I started a thread that I thought may bolster that but it didnt so i needed to understand why it was so hard for others to comment , I knew why it was for me. |

Many people also start 1for1's, where you ask for comments, and commit to giving them back to eveyone who gives.

I totally agree with your statement also. I typically return comments as well. I try and choose a commenters photo that hasn't been commented on.
However, I started a thread last week asking for comments. It was the 1st time I shot only in RAW and long exposure (6, 8 and 10 seconds) and would have loved some feedback on what I can do to improve (I knew they weren't the best). Had 30 views on that thread and about the same amount of views on the photo, but NO comments. Were they that bad or that good? I couldn't tell you. I gave up on that thread and deleted the shots from my portfolio.
P.S. I also added in the thread I would return comments. |

...And thats a good example of what I am talking about why is it so hard for others to comment and what can be done to help them comment more or be better at it

Sometimes it's a timing issue with your post. Give it 3 or 4 bumps over 2 or 3 days at different times of the day and see if that helps.
I didn't see the photos but can tell you that lack of replies to a thread are not really inidicative of anything specific. It's often a competition for people's attention and time in the forums - with lots of challenges lately that compete for their attention as well. Don't take it personally. Re-post 'em. :) |

I don't take it personally.I have received some very helpful comments in the past and it has helped me a lot (I wanted to stress that point). But, I was taking shots in a mode I'm not TO familiar with (RAW) and long exposures and would have loved some feedback. Just the fact that some people looked at the photos but didn't reply to my question (which was the whole point) is a bit of a downer. |
