I can't believe I can't figure this out.
When I'm using my 430 EX I can't figure out how to change the aperture. WHen I turn the flash on in P mode it sets the speed to 1/60 and the aperture to the widest aperture the lens can handle.
It won't let me change the speed, nor the aperture.
If I go to AP mode its like the camera forgets the flash is on it and tries to meter the scene like normal, giving me shutter speeds of 30 seconds and again the widest aperture.
I don't have a handheld meter so how do I:
A. make the camera know what the correct exposure is going to be when the flash goes off.
B. know the exposure settings myself without a meter.
C. change the aperture while in P mode.
Is there no easier way than going to M mode and doing the math for f-stop changes in order to keep the exposure correct while changing the aperture.

In P mode you don't select the aperture or speed. P is an automatic mode.
In P mode the camera tries for a fast(ish) shutter speed. Depending on how bright the scene already is it will either measure the light and use the flash for fill or it will use the flash as the sole light source. Bright for fill, dark for sole.
In aperture priority your camera is going to meter for the ambient light and use the flash for fill.
Shutter priority will choose the aperture for you up to the sync speed.
What you want is manual mode. Here you set the shutter speed and aperture and the flash will output enough light to illuminate the scene correctly. If you're trying to have a set exposure for the background and subject, no, there is no easier way than doing the math to keep the exposure equivalent. |
