I heard that Nikon lenses are so fast, you can use them to capture at greater than the speed of light, to get pictures of stuff that is in the past, up to four years ago in fact!

Amazing stuff, but true!

If you shoot a photo of a star that is four light years away, you are actually shooting a photo of that star four years ago. A photo of the sun shows the sun as it was 8 minutes in the past. The moon: 1.28 seconds.

Consequently, you can never shoot a photo of an event as it happens. By the time the light reaches your lens, the event has already happened, although for most subjects the time delay is merely fractions of a nanosecond.

One of the more technical aspects of portrait photography, and perhaps a new concept for beginners, is the importance of camera-to-subject distance and its relationship with the focal length of your lens. The closer the subject gets to the lens of the camera the more exaggerated this distortion becomes. This phenomenon is sometimes called foreshortening and can be used for some very cool creative effects.

I rented the same lenses for the wedding of a friend (with 350D and 400D, though) and was extremely happy with the 70-200. The 24-70 was certainly good, but when I looked at the shots I found I often had a tack sharp background instead of the bride. Well, not shure if it was the glasses fault, though.

Some of the shots can be viewed here: Wedding.
