Maybe you should start by telling us what YOU do that "gets around" the rules. |

Try going to Konador"s website and check out his video tutorials. Or maybe I should keep my mouth shut and learn from his tutorials myself. |

I know I've seen Ben's tutorials before (they're excellent) but I can't find the link now. Can you post? |

You mean this one? It's on his Profile page. And I'm ready to start scrolling down the list. |

Extreme use of shadows/highlights produced a halo that wasn't really there. And YES, this did survive a DQ request.

From the looks of it that photo's score didn't survive the voters. :P
ETA: Interesting image btw.

I had one like this but it didn't survive the DQ request. It was perfectly legal. |

I've got one in a current challenge with a halo and it's not doing at all well. The majority of the comments are that I sharpened too much when it is sunlight from behind the subject. Oh well, guess I won't try that one again :-/ |

The real question is: What do those rules have to do with photography? |

Selective Color adjustment layer:
The BG was pink and I didn't want a pink background for my entry. Used selective color to make it yellow. :-) Perfectly legal and almost as good as painting the background.

I had no clue selective color was Basic Editing legal. I'll have to use it in the future. |

To be clear, that means selecting a color using the select color tool. Not hand-selecting pixels that look like the same color.
Also keep in mind that anything that seems to create something that's not there originally will get you DQd whether you used the same tool or not.
As always, it's not just the tool, it's what you do with it. |

To make it even more clear -- any selection, even one based on color, is a DQ offense under the Basic editing rules. On the Select menu there is an option to select a color range -- this is not legal. Basicly, anything that puts the 'marching ants' around some portion of the image is not legal.
The Selective Color adjustment is however, because it is applied to the entire image -- even though it only affects part of it.

Would never do this, but you can take a picture of your lens cap on or anything else during the submission period to get correct EXIF times, then paste any picture as a new layer and merge the two.
Voila, you just got around the date issue without editing the EXIF.
Like I said, I would never do this, but I wonder if it's been tried.

But then your original is just a black photo... there's no way that would get through the DQ process.
