Anyone use one of these?

I tried making up a test rig last night using some thick black paper for the "body" and used a piece of plain white paper for the diffuser area.
I had to open up the aperture quite a few stops, but it did produce some nice diffused results! (None of them were really good enough to post up, but I will do some more tests soon...)

How would this compare to the stoffen items or the Gary Fong thingy?

I would also like to be able to use a flash off-camera, but with the 350D not having infra red slave control or a PC socket, what is the best (Cheapest) way for me to go about this?
The canon hotshoe extension cords are very pricey and only about 2 feet long.
Wireless radio is more than I want to spend.
Optical slave is probably the way to go, but will these single pin Trigger devices work with the Canon dedicated shoe mount flash (Mine is the Sigma 500DG ST).
Such as this...

I have read that you can cover the on board camera flash with a bit of non-exposed film to turn it into an infra red transmitter for triggering slave devices.

This product actually comes with such film for doing precisely this: Firefly slave trigger

So what would you guys recomend for a cheap remote flash set-up?

Someone posted this last week:
Strobist
It gave me LOADS of ideas, particularly in the Flickr discussion group. I might get some of the cheap cheap ebay triggers eventually, but I need to do a bit more research. As for a diffuser, I've been using a milkbottle - works really well... but you look like a lunatic!

All the best

LOL - I know what you mean...

My cardboard attempt last night is actually pretty good, though to anyone else, it looks like I've stuck a cardboard box on top of my camera = Lunatic!

Build a better Bounce Card this guys does a movie (long winded but fun) on how to build a bounce card for you hotshot flash. Simple, cheap and easy to make.

So simple, yet quite effective. I have a sto-fen omnibounce but for fun made a couple of these and threw them in the bag. Yes they work a treat, and at this price can't be beat.

Thanks, Andy.

I'll have a look at that when I get home as I can't view video files in work...

Hi Al,

Yes, I use something similar, and in fact posted both test results comparing to the LightSphere, Lumiquest softbox and Omnibounce as well as how I made it. Please see this thread for a description of the box I made.

The details of the tests I did are in this thread, with the results shown on page three.

In short, the "mystery modifier" outperformed the others by quite a large margine. Yours looks similar, and I would predict that it performs likewise.

Hi Jemison...

Your "Mystery Modifier" is Excellent! Produced some great results too!
Thanks for the input...

AL.
