So can we, for example, use the burn tool to create smoke?

It suddenly occurred to me that since there's no "major elements" rule, we can DRAW stuff into our pictures with a brush. Which, of course, leads to the logical conclusion; for this challenge, you can shoot a white wall for your "original" with EXIF data, then do everything else with the paintbrush and pencil tools, if you're so inclined...

Right?

That's the way I read it, Robert, but I'm not sure the voters will like that. I think mine will be a digital construction that begins with a photograph. I think.

I agree with ya there, it was just a wicked observation :-)

My curiosity got the best of me and I went and set the shot I saw in my head. Just finished PS-ing and well.... I love it! Probably means its destined for a 2.3. :/

What if an image is far side-like? Does it have to be an exact recreation, or is it ok if it's like one that he does?

I read the rules again, and it does say "emulate". It didn't say copy? Agree, disagree?

I think that whether you shoot an original Far Side-esque scene or attempt to recreate one of the actual comics, either is going to be an emulation since we use a totally different medium than Gary Larson. ;)

And - No matter how well-read we are, I'm sure nobody here has read ALL of his comics and/or committed them to memory - so who'd know if you used your own idea... so long as it fits the general feel of his work.

The way I read it, is that it can be a re-creation of one of his comics in photographic form OR a photograph that captures the twisted & warped spirit of Larson's Far Side. As you pointed out "emulate" doesn't nccesarily mean that one has to copy. One can attempt "to imitate with effort to equal or surpass" Larson's style.

Looks like I'm # 29.

I have a conspiracy theory about Gary Larson and his comics. I don't want to say now, what it is, but will wait until after voting is over to reveal it.

I have proof. I wouldn't want Larson fans to attack me.

I finally had an idea ... but I only have tonight to set it up but I'm afraid that it will take a long time.

As fate would have it, a great "Larson" scene fell in front of me, with my camera in my hands. So, I have an entry. It stands alone, with a good title and all. Doesn't need the reference to the specific G. Larson comic it emulates. But.... should I make a reference to the classic. Or, even put a url link in the title? How would one do that? Or, is it just a bad idea.

I know that this is down to the hours now, but I have a question.

It does not necessarily impact the photo very much but wanting to stay true to Larson's Far Side just what Font did he use for the captions?????

Scalvert, do you know? Anyone?

I believe that he handwrote all of the text.

Looks like a simple Helvetica or Times. See the link that James_So posted near the beginning of this thread for examples.

Only 37 entries on deadline day? Criminy! Of course, I haven't submitted anything either... yet. ;-)
09/14/2006 01:44:30 PM · #96
i've had several ideas, but no time to spend on them...

who knows... i might throw one of the simpler ones together tonight and submit 2 mins before deadline, as usual...

If this challenge remains so sparsely populated, I won't know which way to feel about my image: happy it made the top 50 or sad it got the brown ribbon...

Give it time - I believe that that number will shoot up easily by 30 more between the time most people get off work at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Then there will be the mad dash flood of 30 more 20 minutes before deadline:-) :-)

I dunno about that; this is a very intimidating challenge topic, requires a certain twisted mindset to contemplate entering I think.
