I have spent most of the day backing up all my photo files to DVD's. Historically, I have made backups for safety's sake, not to free up storage capacity. In this case, I undertook the because I am running out of hard drive space and plan to delete the raw files once they are on DVD.

I am curious - are most folks backing up to DVD / CD these days, or have the convenience of inexpensive hard drives made it unnecessary? Personally, I'm too concerned about hardware failure to not backup to external media.

Your thoughts?

i have a 250GB external that i put all my shots on as soon as i get back to the office - so my Workstation has the pics on and i have a backup on my external - i also backup the unedited pics on to DVD. after i've edited pics and the work is out the door i backup twice onto DVD one stays in the office, the other is stored off site, idealy i'd have the one in the office in a fire proof safe, but i've not round to doing that yet..

if you're concered about hardware failure, you should worry more about how long you're DVD's are going to last if they're not stored correctly..

i'm just waiting on a special case to put my SCSI drives in for RAID5 storage box.
