How do you guys go about lighting a group of subjects?

i do a lot of band photography and sometimes have trouble lighting all of the subjects

i usually stagger them at different depths but if i use a flash it'll light the subject closest to me and leave the subjects furthest from me very dark

how do i get around this?

thanks :)

Lightsphere, but then I guess you'd have to upgrade to a DSLR. Hmmm.

Even when you aim it AT the subjects? I've rarely had any problem lighting a large group with it. Depending on where we are shooting, I may have to do a couple of test shots to see which orientation works best for the LS.
