The images are straight out of the camera ... straight out of the box. I have done nothing in post and the camera settings are default. I used a tripod and my 18-70 D70s kit lens.
Image 1.jpg was a 4 second shot, natural light, ISO 100 (Yay!) f/4.5, 55mm
Image 2.jpg was a 1/4 of a second shot with my soft box right over the guitar. It was f/.4.5, ISO 100, 55mm
Image 3.jpg was camera set to Auto with the on camera flash firing. 1/60 of a second, f/4.5, ISO 200, 55mm
100% crop of image 3.jpg
I like it! It is definitely a Nikon Sturdy & firm not plasticy. The form factor is surely smaller that my D70s and I can't wait to get the grip. My bigger hands want it. But it is still very comfortable.
The controls are intuitive and I have adapted easily. I like the new features I have played with but I am looking forward to diving into the depths of my new camera.
So far on a scale of 1-10 I give it a solid 9 but I am biased. More later.
My new D80

As soon as I heard it was coming out I called my local Nikon dealer and put down a deposit. I got the first one of the two they got so I didn't wait. :-)
At this point your guess is as good as mine to how long the wait will be. I don't think as long as the D200 cuz of Christmas but I don't know.
And thanks the camera did all the work. :-)

Hurry up and enter that camera in a challenge. You will have the highest rated shot with the D80. lol. I bet it gets tons of views too, since right now you are the only owner of the camera on the entire site. man I'm jealous.

I called Adorama after hearing that Waz got his D80. I asked them if they have the D80, body only. They said yes and I asked "O.K., when will I get mine, I ordered the first day that you advertised it." He checked my order and said that it would be shipped today. When I got home I saw the email message stating that it had shipped. Yeahhhh!!!
Anyway, if you want one, Adorama has them in stock.

If the 80 is pretty much like the 200, you're going to love that camera. It's supposed to be smaller and lighter than the D200. I've experimented with the compressed/uncompressed raw feature and it makes very little difference. Nikon polycarbonate bodies are extermely tough. If the D80 is like the D50 it will give better out of the camera jpgs than the 200. Enjoy!

I thought about challenging you to the first highest score with this camera, but decided that I better see if I get it before you enter a Sunday challenge. I expect to get it on Monday. Maybe you could be a sport and wait until the following week to give me a chance to get out and use it after I get it.
Just kidding. I let you have the high score for the first week, but after that... |

Really want to see more pics with the 80, I have been deciding whether to upgrade my 70 to the 80, my only beef if the SD cards. I really hate having to spend more on extra cards that can't be easily used with both cameras.

I want to take more pics with my D80. LOL I will be shooting the heck out of it this weekend and I will post the images. The SD card thing messed with me at first but now to me it is a non issue.
So far it is great!

My neighbor picked up a D80 lastnight. I seen him outside in his garden at 10:30PM taking photos. I wasn't sure why he was out so late so I asked him this morning if he got some good photos. He told me he got home from the store at 8:30 with the camera and couldn't resist taking some shots with it before bed. He is going to bring it over this afternoon so we can compare the D50 mine D70 his D80 his D200 mine and check out the differences. Should be interesting.

I didn't even know he was into photography, I new he had a camera but I thought he was one of those I only use it for special event guys, But he told me today that he always takes his camera along when he rides his bike which he goes on 30-40 mile treks every weekend.
I am going to show him DPC later when he comes over.
and to clarify what I said earlier
we will be comparing the D70s to the others not a D70 my bad.

I ordered one online from Ritz camera last weekend and got it on Thursday! It is my first digital SLR so I have little to compare it to but it is great so far! I got it with the 18- 135mm kit lens and images look so sharp through the viewfinder! I was able to get a few shots in on Friday to try it out but I have to work the weekend so can't play much until Tuesday. I have a sampling of the shots in my gallery. I need to upload some to DP too now that I have a membership. Except for the header, the shots are out of camera unedited and full sized versions (click on "original" if you want to see the big one). Used the finest setting and aperature priority. Hey- if I get something together quickly maybe I can have the highest rated picture for two cameras! (the Konica Minolta A200 presently). But once people start using this, it won't last long. The biggest problem I have had in the past was sharpness and this is much sharper! Some of my D80 pictures can be seen here: //www.pbase.com/jeffryz/nikon_d80_pictures
