Two questions about the Gimp (running on a Mac):
1) Does GIMP have blending modes such as soft light, overlay, and so on?
2) Does GIMP have a browser utility, something along the line of Adobe Bridge or so?
I haven't been successful at finding these answers from Google search.
Thanks! |

I'm interested too. I'm working on putting together a linux machine here so GIMP will be what I have for my desktop...that is if it's good enough.

Yes, it's quite good enough.
Yes it does support all the various blending modes for layers.
I'm not sure if there is a browser like Bridge specifically for Gimp. But there is bound to be a Open Source Browser utility that will work with it.

Thanks, Leroy!
"Open Source Browser Utility"? Pardon my lack of knowledge, but, does that mean a browser utility that would work inside of GIMP?

Yes, GIMP is a good image processing program. (I'm running the development version, 2.3.10, at it has some great improvements since the 2.2 release).
It doesn't have complete color management support nor does it have 16-bit color support, but I do my major color and tonal adjustments in the RAW conversion with UFRaw, where it is done in 16-bit precision, then only after that is it imported into the GIMP at 8-bit depth. It's the best thing I've found. |

I like to use GQView to browse images. It's simple, powerful, and fast.
I set up GIMP, UFRaw and Neat Image as external tools, so I can just right click on any image and choose to open it with any of them.
P.S. GQView also displays Exif info from images, AND can view camera RAW files. (It actually reads the embedded preview image--it's full size, mind you, though, at least on my D70 and D200, there is actually a Large-Basic JPEG embedded in the NEF file.)

I don't know of one that works actually inside of the GIMP, but you can drag images from GQView onto the GIMP toolbox and it will open in GIMP. |

No, as far as I know, there isn't a browser that works inside of GIMP as of yet.
Open Source refers to the development of programs like Linux and GIMP where code is freely available to be used and modified.

Ah! Thanks for all the answers!
One more question - is there a layer menu somewhere? A way to view the layers? I can't find it. |

Nevermind! I found it. Cool. Looks like a pretty powerful program.

ONE MORE question, if someone would know the answer:
What is "Divide" mode? |

Found a GIMP manual:
//gug.sunsite.dk/docs/Grokking-the-GIMP-v1.0/node90.html
Apparently Divide Mode is a blending mode.
See section 5.6

Never used it, I would hazzard to guess it is the opposite of Multiply :-)
Anyway, this site is pretty cool for learning GIMP.

Is there any way you can hook me up with the 2.3.10 version? I've read the logs and I must say that I want to take advantage of the new stuff. I have C++ (I'm a VB programmer, it came with the suite.) But I am not even sure I can build it with that. I don't even know how to build C applications. |

Thanks again, everybody.
I'm trying to use only GIMP for the next week or so (to force myself to learn it).

Could you "drag" an image from iPhoto to GIMP? How do you drag an image from one program to another? |

I haven't seen any Windows builds of Gimp 2.3, I'm not sure what goes into building it. Sorry I'm not of more help on this. |

I don't know about iPhoto, but you can drag photos from GQView's thumbnail panel onto the GIMP toolbox to open them. |
