My wife & I are wanting to open our own photography business, but are having a horrible time deciding on a name. We want to use some variant of my (our?) name, and plan to focus on portrait work initially - mostly location work due to lack of a proper studio.
We had considered Billy Ross photography, but there is a gentleman in Memphis (on the opposite end of Tennessee)named Billy Ross, and he has been in the photography business a great number of years... I would never even think of trying to \'ride his coat-tails\' just because of having the same name, so that eliminates one option.
My full name is Billy Wayne Ross, so we had considered:
B.W. Ross Photography
B. Ross Photography
Ross Photography
We would love to use some kind of adverb / adjective in the name, but feel that it might lock us into one particular area (we will be doing everything from senior/family/baby to glamour/nude/erotic). Having three daughters of our own, we can see why people wouldn't bring their sweet 16 to us if the name is 'Mature Hotties Photography\' or whatever.
(Also, I know that my profile doesn't yet convey any serious images, and we are working on gathering model pics ASAP.)
Anyway, neither of us is having any luck whatsoever coming to a decision, and we could really use some unbiased advice. This site never ceases to amaze me with all the creativity around, and I am really hoping someone can help...
Thanks!!! |

Does your wife also shoot? If so, I would go with Ross Photography. |

Is there something you specialize in? My business name is "Between Rounds Photography". Most horse shows I attend I also compete in, so I take pictures "between rounds". I set a table up at the shows and put a photo album out so people can see what else I do. |

Personally I prefer Ross Photography. I would NOT use B.W. Ross Photography for the following reason:
By coincidence, your initials (B.W.) are the same as B/W which on quick glance might imply strictly black and white photography. Yes, it's a silly nitpick, but when people are skimming through the yellow pages, or local photographers listing, I would avoid anything that might have a double meaning. That is unless you plan to work only in black in white... in that case, your initials would work in your favor.
My $0.02 USD. |

Very good advice so far (I hadn't thought of the B&W part - good catch!)
It isn't so much that my wife takes photos (though she is learning that too), but that it is something we enjoy doing together. She's very good at helping think of the poses, and generally keeping me from forgetting things ("Now where did I leave that CF card?")
Always wanted our own business, and we are finally getting started! {I don't think it would have happened without learning so much from everyone here.}

Ross is the Boss.
If it's a drive through photography, it can be called "Drive By Shootings".
Maybe RossPhoto, Ross's QuickPics, or maybe Life-on-Camera.
Many business names are a 2-syllable concatenation of two words.

What is your wifes name? What type of photogaphy do you excel at? Do you travel for a shoot, or stay local? What does your portfolio mainly consist of? Which style of photography do you enjoy (not nessisarily pays the bills) |

Here are some possibilities to springboard from.
What I do is put goofy things together and change bits of it till something draws me into a particular direction. Get a thesaurus and find all the words that have the same meanings of the things your considering. such as photo, photography, shot, shoot, studio, design, event, ect. You get the picture and scramble the words around till something starts to sound good and catchy. You should have seen the sheets of goofy words I rearanged to come up with mine.
Also consider the anacronym for the title.
B & G Photography (kinda rymes)= BGP
Billenda Digital Agenda = BDA (if you like this abreviation you could then change the word to another one that has the same starting letter)
Billenda Digital Assignments
Since your adventure includes both of you, dont choose a title that excludes her.
(yes I know these samples are goofy) The goofier the better, you never know where you will end up.
