I am wondering if there is an accurate way to crop a photo if you do not know the size of the print to be made. I have taken some photos and will be giving a CD only and they will be doing the printing, but I feel some cropping is in order, but how do I crop if I am not sure the size print they will want? They actually may want several different sizes I am thinking. Any help, suggestions, guidance to a thread already dealing with this would be helpful! I am using Photoshop Elements 3.0. Thanks! |

No real help here, are they going to print on one of those machines where they can drag the outline and choose the crop themselves? If not, maybe crop to standard sizes and put them in a respective directory on the CD, 8x10, 5x7, 4x6 etc? |

It's all about aspect ratios. For example, a 4x6 has a 1.5 to 1 aspect ratio, an 8x10 has a 1.25 to 1 aspect ratio. The larger number is the longer side. To figure it out, just divide the longer side by the shorter side (10 divided by 8). A 5x7 has a 1.4 aspect ratio. Not a huge difference there from a 4x6 a/r, so I wouldn't necessarily create a separate crop just for that size if the subject is centered with a little room at either end. Hope that makes sense.
Edit to add: Konador made a nice video tutorial that includes cropping for print sizes here. And here's another tutorial about resizing for standard print sizes.
