If you really want to photograph the moon up close with your camera, get a telescope that you can mount a camera to. A small refractor will also allow you to use it as a long telephoto.

is there a special name for telescopes that can mount a camera? What is the difference between a telescope & a refractor?

No, you can typically mount a camera to just about any type of telescope. A refractor is a type of telescope. There is a lot of educational information at Orion's website:

They sell telescopes, but their site is very informative too.

Refractors use optical glass lenses to focus the light as opposed to reflectors which use optical mirrors or cassegrain scopes which use both mirrors and lenses.

I have a little celestron 80mm spotter scope that works well as a telephoto lens (400mm focal length) it does great on the moon. It is light and cost about $149 to $189 depending on where you buy one.

Celestron 80mm Spotter scope

Scopetronics has a LARGE selection of digital camera adapters for telescopes Scopetronics Digi cam adapters

here is a shot of the moon with the celestron 80mm scope and my canon D60 Moon Sample

Astrophotography can be tricky so lots of pratice and patience is a must, but it is very rewarding when you get a great shot
