I'm looking for a 500GB external harddrive with USB 2.0 and 1394. I saw the LaCie drives but then at NewEgg.com there were a lot of comments on the drives crashing. Then I saw the Iomega Black 500GB and the reviews looked good. What are people using and have had success with?

I've only bought one and it's an 80Gb Iomega. I haven't had any problems or complaints with it in 2yrs. I would buy Iomega again if the price was right.

I have had a Lacie 250 GB Firewire hard drive for a few years now with no problems at all.

I have an Acer (I believe) 250GB drive that I have been very happy with for the last year, except for a couple weeks ago when it toasted 69,000 photos I had on it. Other than that little problem, it's been great! :P

We use LaCie drives at work, and I also have a Seagate and a Maxstor at home. The LaCie drives are quiet -- they use the heavy case as a heat-sink and omit the fan, and come up to 1TB.

I'm still a little hesitant to use drives over the 250-300MB range -- I'd rather buy more smaller drives and not try to cram it all in one box, since the cost/GB is roughly the same, and there's a greater chance for (and consequences to) a crash on one giant drive.

I like THESE drives- they're compact, quiet, fast, and feature built-in hubs.

ok you have a choice of 3 PATA Drives that go to 500GB
Hitachi 8ms
Maxtor 8.5ms
Seagate 11ms

and 7 SATA300 drives
Hitachi 8.5ms
Maxtor 9ms
Maxtor 8.5ms
Western Digital 9ms
Western Digital 8.9ms
Seagate 8.5ms
Seagate SATA2

then u just need to get a box to put it in :)

i use an ICY Box (black) (USB + Firewire 400) and it uses passive cooling so the only noise is the noise of the drive i have in it (Maxtor 250GB with 16MB Cache)

I recently purchased a 500GB Western Digital My Book at Best Buy for $199.00. I also had a 10% off coupon, so the total (before tax) was $179. I was originaly looking for a Network storage device, but I just connected this one to my server and shared it. The server is always on anyway. It's working perfectly. It is fast and hasn't given me any sort of problems.

I am unsure if the sale (really it was $299) is still going on.

It only has USB 2.0. It also has a good appearance.

Yesterday, before this thread was started, I saw the same external harddrive at Costco for $249.00 and decided to research this one.

Does anybody else have any comments regarding this harddrive?

I have 2 Maxtor 300 Gig externals. perhaps not the greatest drives in the world. But they are built like tanks compared to some of the other brands. They travel alot so I needed something that could take some beatin and bangin I have found that they are more stable using USB vs Firewire.

edit: moved question to separate thread

I currently have six LaCie 250GB porsche FW, one 500GB porsche USB (with one more in the mail), and one 600GB Big Disk triple. No problems with them yet, and I plan to keep buying them. They work great, however I would not stack the fanless models as heat does build up. YMMV.

I just got a 320G external WD from buy.com for $108 (when using google checkout). Arrived 2 days after ordering. Since I'm just now plugging it in, I can't tell you how good it is. But my other WD (150G) works great.
