Corel is offering a free download of their new software "Snapfire".
This software is geared toward the beginner and offers sharing, printing, greeting cards ,slideshows, fast fixups of photos, black&white, Sepia, etc.

I havent tried, but I thought maybe some of you maybe interested..

FYI - You can easily reset this value in Windows by holding down shift and right-clicking on an image file, then choose "open with" and pick the image viewer/editor of your choice. selecting "always use this program" resets the registry to use your own program.

I don't think Corel was being nefarious in any way in their installer, although most installers do offer you a choice to set the app as the default.

I just downloaded and installed this because I was curious to see how well it worked, even though I was pretty sure I wouldn't use it. Like buzzrock said, it does make it your default image program but in Corel's defense, the product is really marketing to the most basic of users, most of whom probably expect such a thing and wouldn't know how to change file associations anyway. (And as dsa157 mentioned, it can be undone.)

Snapfire is certainly no Photoshop. It's more similar, I believe, to Picasa. It has very basic editing features, including brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation, focus, crop, rotate and sepia/b&w. It has a review feature where you can browse photos, rate them, and add title and description information. You can then sort by rating, filename, etc.

I think probably the most interesting features are in the "Create" section where you can make collages, page layouts, calendars, greeting cards, etc. There are a bunch of different layouts you can select for each project and then you just drag and drop your photos. Here's two quick examples I made with about zero effort.

If you're not looking to do collages or calendars, I'd probably say skip Snapfire. The rest of the features aren't all that slick or any great improvement over other similar softwares. But if you're looking to do some fast and easy layouts, it might be worth a look. (But definitely set your file associations back because there's no reason to wait while the program opens just to view a jpg.)

Any concerns with this program modifying your EXIF data?

I added a rating to a photo and saved that and the EXIF doesn't appear to have been modified. However, I would definitely submit a test shot to the SC before modifying challenge entries in any way.
