My daughter started Grade 1 today and I took the day off to take her (wife had meetings). We got to the school after her complaining all morning how nervous she was. I kept telling her that being nervous was part of the excitement and every student at school was nervous as they were all starting a new grade today (we didn't get into the dynamics of those few who are returning to the same grade).
Standing in the playground waiting for the doors to open, it began. Tears starting filling up in her eyes and sobs began as she begged me to take her back home. After several minutes I was getting no where and was convinced that she was going to be coming home with me as she was starting to get out of control. Nothing I said was getting through until...
I finally got her to calm down enough to look me in the eyes as I knelt down and gave her my fatherly words of wisdom...
"Sweetie, listen carefully. Starting right now I want you to think of four words that will make you forget that your nervous and make this day and every day easy for you. When your tummy starts to hurt and you get scared, just remember these words, "easy peasy lemon squeazy"
She paused, thought about, asked me to repeat it and then laughed. POOF! No more tears, no more complaining. She turned around and started talking to her friends.
When the bell rang, a lot of the kids (including some of the tougher ones) began to cry and hug their parents. I thought my daughter was going to do the same and we'd be back to square one. She came over asked me to kneel down and gave me a huge long hug. I told her that she was going to be okay and she whispered in my ear, "I know Daddy..easy peasy lemon squeasy. This is a piece of cake." And off she went.
Thanks Nigel Powers.
