When you have a repeating row of objects, where your DOF setting blurs out the ones in the distance, which object should be focused on (which should be sharp)?
For example, in this member's photo:
She mentioned that she would get dinged for focusing on the second guide. Is there a rule-of-thumb on which object should be in focus when shooting these types of photos?

Depends on what the point of interest is. If they are similar then most people want everything in focus. |

I don't think you can make a rule for that. It just really depends on what you want to do.
However, in general focusing on the area of greatest interest, the area you want to be the main attention getter, is a sort of guideline that's good to follow. |

Focusing on the first one will render all other out of focus (depending upon depth of field, which in turn depends upon the aperture selected). This gives depth to the image.
If you focus on the second object, first and third will be slightly out of focus, while all other will be grossly out of focus.
However, IMO, which one you focus depends upon the subject, and no rules can be drawn here! |
