I am looking for the Canon Master Transmitter that goes on the hot shoe of a Canon body to a Canon flash.

I am not sure of the name of this transmitter, so hence the thread.

Can anyone give me some lov'in.

Thanks in advance.

For only $180 more.... you could buy another Canon 580EX which functions as a master, plus then it can play "fill flash" at the same time.

(I only mention this because I was never able to justify in my own mind spending $209 on a transmitter - I now have a Canon 580EX, a Canon 550EX and a Canon 420EX and I use all three)

Does the infrared need to be line of sight?

Does the Pocket Wizard work on the EX flashs?

I really doubt the Pocket Wizards work with any other system. If you do get the PW's, though, you definitely don't need line of sight.

Out in the open, yes. In a room, the light will bounce around a bit, and I generally don't have to worry too much about line of sight (except as the room gets bigger then it becomes more like being out in the open).

I use the Canon system for small / quick / portable studio-like setups. I use the PocketWizards and my strobes when I'm at a wedding / reception.

So, Pocket Wizards can't be used on Canon EX flashs?

Not that I'm aware of... I don't know how you would hook a PW up to the Canon flashes unless there is some kind of hot shoe adapter.

One more thought:

The PW's simply trigger the flash output. So you measure your light output with a light meter and manually adjust the power on each of your strobes for a proper exposure.

Canon's flashes use e-TTL to calculate output. The master flash (or the transmitter you originally asked about) triggers a pre-flash which the camera then measures and the master then sends out another flash telling all of the flashes to fire at an appropriate power (and this can be adjustable within 3 different groups A, B or C on the flashes). I typically set my main flash to a lower relative amount so that it plays "fill flash" and let the slave be the main flash so that I can get side lighting.
