Since my Casio Z1000 is gone I have been looking for a replacement. Just in the past month or there have been like 4 compact cameras that have 10MP...I'm looking at two right now. The Samsung NV Series: NV10 and the Canon Powershot A640
The Canon looks to be the only one with Shutter and Aperture priority mode. That's big...see if anyone else has seen these new toys yet

Love new toys.. but I'd *seriously* suggest staying under 6mp on a digicam.. that many pixels crammed on those tiny little sensors = trouble.
Even the 10mp APS-C sensors are beginning to show signs of "Ooops, we've reached our limits here."
At least.. for now.

After the last month of carting the full camera pack (20D + + +) os with the family, I have been tempted to grab one of these high end P&S for the simplicity when photg is not the main purpose and to avoid fighting with stupid "security" people at airports - don't ask until I cool down in a year or two :-/. I have a little S230 - 2.3Mp thing that is ok but nothing more then bright sunlight type of thing.
They seem ok but are missing the IS which I think would be a required option on these type of things - for me at least. I also noticed some (Olympus??) that were water proof to a dozen meters or so, which might add some possibilities as a second low hassle camera. |

I agree that 10mp is probably too much for an ultra-compact. My Pentax W10 is great fun to use but even at 6mp there is a lot of noise and the images are rather smooth.
The ultra-compact with the best sensor is the Fuji F30 (6mp). I haven't used the camera though so I don't really know what else is good or bad about it. I've read it's great for night use but that one should get something else for using in sunny conditions. I'm not sure I understand why good light should be a problem.
