I got a new computer a few weeks ago, decided it was time to take all my pics, move them to external drive and then archive them on DVD. I did and guess what??? The damn external drive crashed, (BEFORE I ARCHIVED) not just can't be read, can not be seen... I have tried everything I know including linux.. So I ask, I plead, does anyone here do data recovery.. via reading platters? I have checked with some places online and it will cost about a grand. but every picture I have ever taken is on this hd..

There could be a big difference between a corrupt drive and one that just simply can't be recognized by your computer. Not being seen by your computer could be that there is a driver issue, cable issue, etc.

What kind of drive is it and what is the interface (USB, IEEE 1394, TCP/IP)? Is it a personal external drive or part of a NAS setup? Also, what is your computer (make, model, OS)?

I would try connecting the drive to another computer to see what happens.

For all you considering external storage in your future, make sure you copy (not move) the files to the external drive. Do not delete from you local computer until you have verified that the copy process was successful (by archiving or using some other method of redundancy).

Where did you move them from? Wouldn't you still have them there?

I would agree with the above. If the drive can't be seen it sounds more like a communication problem between the two than a 'crash'.

I had a similar issue just a week or so ago. I have an external drive that I use specifically for backing up photos before I burn them to DVD, and I was getting a bit too confident in its abilities.

I hadn't burned anything to DVD since January, and the doggone thing went goofy on me. We had some weird power fluctuations around that time, and I'm guessing that's what did it.

Anyway, I wound up buying the Easeus recovery program, and I was able to retrieve just about everything. It cost me a hundred bucks, but that was well worth it considering I was set to lose practically everything I shot this whole year.
