yeah... i know.. canadian films are not exactly regarded as gems in the world scale... but there are some good ones.
i'm trying to remember the title of a movie I saw a couple of years ago and really enjoyed... it's a bout a 28 year old drifter/skateboarder that is the best man to a friend that ends up cheating on his fiance with some floozy. the main character (drifter) also befriends a teenage girl who talks some sense into him. i remember it being pretty powerful film and a good soundtrack too.
i want to rent it today if i remember what it is, along with another canadian film i enjoyed, turning paige.
anyone know these films? any other canadian films to mention?
oh yeah, niagara motel was good too. saw it recently.

Sorry, the film you describe rings no bells with me.
One of my favourite Canadian films would have to be Calendar (1993), by Atom Egoyan. I remember seeing it for the first time while I was studying film at Ryerson in Toronto. It's a very careful and clever blend of video and film (as a lot of Egoyan's films are), and a subtle examination of the end of a relationship.
Dance Me Outside (1995), by Bruce McDonald, is another good one. It's more accessible than Egoyan's work. It's funny and well-acted and not without some deeper feeling.
There are many more, but these are the two that come to mind for me first.
There are many gems in Quebec cinema, also.

Haven't see Barbarian Invasions but I did enjoy Decline of The American Empire.
Here's a Canadian film to avoid...Red Green's Duct Tape Forever. That's about as bad as a film can get. |
