Ugh.... My new computer has been giving me fits at every turn. Last weekend I had to clean a bunch of Registry Edits, but other than that I haven't changed anything. Now suddenly I can't view RAW files. I reinstalled the Raw viewer for XP, did no good. I can't see them in PS CS2, can't see them in Adobe Bridge, can't see them with Digital Photo Pro. Computer knows they are RAW files, but NO application will open them. WTF?

I did a portrait session for a client this morning and starting to get nervous because I can't f'in see them!!!!

you might need to reinstall the updates for Photoshop CS2. There are two - one for Bridge and one for CS2. I ran into the exact same problem and spent a week trying to figure out what I did and didn't do...

There are some files that Bridge still won't see but photoshop will. No clue why.

Registry edits can be brutal/ Did you back up the registry befor ethe edits, or can you roll back to the pre-edited version?

If so, you can determine if it was the registry edits or not.

You can also see if they open or are viewable on another computer. That will tell you if it is the files or your computer.

You can sned me one of the RAW files if you want and I can see if I can open it. At least you'll know if the files are OK.

I'll be back in an hour or so.

Good luck, I know this is nearve racking.

Lightroom opened them, so its not the files. Thankfully.

David, I didn't back-up my reg edits :( Wish I had now. I'm just about ready to nuke this puter and start again from scratch. I'm just having way too many issues with it. I was cleaning reg edits because I kept getting blue screen crashes. Not crashing now -- but now there is THIS issue.

Since the files did open with Lightroom, I'm just gonna go ahead and convert them to .jpg now and move on. I'll come back to beating my head against this puter after I've processed today's shoot. :/

I hate computers.

Did you try system restore? You should be able to restore back to a previous point just before you messed with the registry and you can get it back. Go to start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore and you can select a date that it saved (before it went bad). Good luck!

Thank you, Marc. I haven't tried that yet, but will. Guess the blue screen crashes are better than not being able to work!! lol

Blue screens happen mostly due to faulty RAM. It might be that some program was trying to access part of the RAM that was corrupt. You might wanna have it checked out.

LOL Yours is probably the most reliable solution!

The machine is only 2 months old, I hope its not a RAM issue. Its creeping ever so slowly through exporting 240 RAW to jpg.... soon as that finishes I'll see if I can fix the stupid thing.

My question is, why did you have to clean registry edits? If you don't know about reg files, no mess with them. If you were trying to clean out spyware, use the MS Anti-spyware removal tool, or there is a shareware called spybot that is free and works very well.

Otherwise... STAY OUT OF YOUR REG FILES

Unless I missed an update (very likely) MS Raw viewer can't see/display 30D CR2 files.

Yeah buy a MAC (whatever...next they will tell you to get a volvo)

Cindi, why the registry hacks in the first place? What was the problem there?

FWIW: Blue Screens aren't always RAM and more times than not are not RAM. Could be your case as it is a newer machine and if the factory didn't burn it in (test) properly it could have RAM issues. Device drivers also cause problems.

Jump up on the couch and tell me about your problem.

Make/Model
WinXP (Pro or Home) or Windows Media Center 2005 (MCE2005)

Did you move the Hard disk from your old computer and try to boot from it in your new one? Did you move any hardware from your old PC to the new one?

How long did it run properly?

NE new software installs?

Andy

I love how people claim software compatibility issues with macs. I love not having to worry about this kind of crap and have the option of using windows if I need to for some horrible reason.

Devastating logic. So it must be true for everybody then.

However the same logic holds true for both camps...

The OP had an issue, and immediately instead of offering any useful help, the McSalesforce chimed in with their comments. Now isn't that a suprise.

In a newspaper newsroom, I've run into more Mac crashes that I care to remember. Macs DO crash and like Windows they seem to crash at the most inappropriate moment.

Cindi, since it is a new computer, you may want to back up any data you have on it and just wipe it with the original install disks. Then run Windows Update a few times to make sure everything is up-to-date. If you are still getting BSOD send it back.
