| For those who use a laptop for a big part of your photo work. What make, model of laptop and what type of screen (LCD) format or quality and size do you have. Are you happy or not so much? If you don't use a laptop then don't answer with opinion. This is for actual users to compare laptops and photo work. |

I use a Dell D820. The resolution of the screen is 1920 by 1200 pixels. It's a 17 inch widescreen. This laptop is a 1.83 GHz (dual core) and 1 Gig of RAM. (I wish I had 2 Gig)
I just got a 500 Gig Western Digital "My Book" external USB hard drive to store and backup my photos.
I have docking station and connect it to my 24 inch LCD. It also has a 1920 x 1200 resolution. I really haven't been sitting in my office too much lately, but I really should start.

I did surprisingly well with a Dell Inspiron with a 15" monitor for several years. I only just upgraded to a graphic-pimped desktop in the last month.

I only use the iBook to download, sort and view photos when traveling. For editing I rely on desktops.

I have a Sony Viao FS415M, which I chose solely because of the screen. I knew any modern laptop would have plenty of speed and storage so about the only difference of any importance to me was the display.
You have to see one of these to believe how much better it is than anything else on the market. It has a huge contrast ratio and is the only laptop I have ever seen that can genuinely be used outdoors with full summer sun shining on the display. I wouldn’t do photo editing in full sun of course but in the shade its just fine. The colours seem excellent too. As for the rest of it, I have had no problems, nice keyboard, plenty of speed, memory and hard drive.
The display is a “True-bright with Dual Lamp Technology” or something like that. They do a standard “True-bright” without the Dual Lamp bit, which is on a par with the best of the rest but the “Dual Lamp” blows the rest out of the water. All of this info is now a few months out of date, so maybe others are doing similar things now.

Fujitsu S7010, 1.5G RAM, CrytalView (very nice glossy screen, spot on contrast) xga (sux cause it is 1024x768 Max).
Same as ZeusZen I use it to View and Weed out the unwanteds...editing is done on my (monitor calibrated) homebrew PC. |

I have a Mackbook, the black 13.1 inch one with the 2.0 ghz intel core duo. I got it in June and absolutely love it! I upgraded the memory since I do a lot of photo and graphics design work (for work, as well as hobby).
It's small enough to take with me nearly everywhere I go (weighs about 5 lbs) and the display, even at the 13.1, is definately adequate for viewing and working on photos- and is amazingly clear and detailed.
I download and mangage my photo library using iPhoto, and do all my post work in photoshop CS2.

i have a Compaq Evo N610c - 1.8Ghz P4, 1GB RAM, 30GB HDD (want to get one of those 7200RPM jobbies in here) 14" 1400x1050px, but i wouldn't trust any colour critical stuff on it (mind u didn't cost me a penny) - i mainly use it for doing extra stuff out of the office, sticking paths around photos, some page layout, webdesign, choosing photos from a shoot.. if i do any photo editing i usually end up re-adjusting it when i get back to the office

HP 15" widescreen. I have to f11 to vote, and for the Free Study, I skip the verticals and wait til I'm on the desktop. Mine is not calibrated in any particular form or fashion. But it is nice on the weekends to sit in the comfy chair with the cats and vote with the laptop. I assure you that if I have trouble viewing something, I skip it 'til I get back to the desktop to make sure I'm not missing anything. :-)
Thinking of getting a laptop, Don? |

I have a Toshiba Satellite at home. I've had it for two and a half years, still works well. (Not sure of the wisdom of getting a desktop computer in japan, in case I ever go back to Australia...) |
