Hi, I have a question for all you computer experts out there. I have a Maxtor 200GB external hard drive that I use for storing all of my photos. Today, I bought a new laptop and I want to install the external hard drive on it as well. It would be an easy way to transfer files from laptop to PC. My question is, if I go and install the hard drive onto my laptop, am I going to screw anything up on the external hard drive? My PC has Windows XP home and my new laptop has Windows XP professional.
Thanks,
Dan |

No? That's great to hear. I thought maybe if I hooked up the hard drive to a different computer, the windows system files may be changed because of the different versions of windows.
Thanks for the help

Let me add that if it is just photos then that will be fine.
Regarding programs that is a different story. Each time you install a program if you install it on a drive other than the C: drive Windows must put a file on the C: drive to be able to reconize it so if you have programs installed on the external they will not work unless you reinstall them again while the external is hooked up to the new computer

| It'll work fine. Make sure you double check on disconnecting and reconnecting your external hard drive first. Some require that the computer needs to be turned off first, others have a button that allows you to hot swap them. |

thats not quite true.. some apps don't write anything to the windows DIR or to the Programs DIR, that said most of the major ones do ;) |
